John Evelyn (1620-1706) was a pioneer for the preservation of natural history and the English language. He was a passionate diarist, gardener and collector of plants, insects, shells and fossils. His diaries, which he wrote in Latin from 1658 to 1705, formed the basis of his two major works "Sylva" and "Academiae Botanicon". His journals were first published in 1704 as ‘Evelyn’s Diary’ by Edward Arber
In 1952 they were republished as ‘The Diary of John Evelyn’ by E.S. de Beer.
